Winter Practices: Pruning for Vine Balance & Disease Control and Soil Health & Nutrition

Vine balance and soil health are both complex topics. This educational event presents information about these difficult areas of vine management. 

Vine balance is essential for producing the best flavors and even ripening of winegrapes. Trunk diseases such as Eutypa lata shorten the productive life of vineyards. Skillful pruning is the best way to manage these issues. Paul Verdegaal will discuss the concept of vine balance and how it can be achieved. Kendra Baumgartner will discuss trunk diseases and their management. 

Soil health is the key to vine health, but monitoring, maintaining, and improving soil health is difficult. Dan Rodrigues will bring together the science and practice of soil sampling and interpreting soil analysis. In addition the production, evaluation, and application of compost will be discussed followed by a tour of the composting operation at J. Lohr Vineyards. Why are fleas considered pests?
