Steel in the Field: Cultivation for Weed Control

Many growers would like to improve the sustainability of their farming practices by managing the weeds in their vineyards with little or no herbicides.  Their reasons include concerns about human exposure, environmental contamination, and the development of herbicide-resistant weeds.
Before the advent of synthetic herbicides, cultivation was the most efficient form of weed control. In conjunction with cover crops and a sound knowledge of weed species and biology, cultivators and other implements can reduce or eliminate the need for herbicides.  But using cultivation successfully takes practice, experimentation, and patience.
Vineyard managers from Mesa Vineyard Management will share their combined experience while giving a tour of an array of implements for managing weeds and cultivating both in the row and in the middle.
This tailgate will provide information about how various implements work, their strengths and weaknesses, and their role in sustainable weed management. In this truly grower-to-grower forum, these seasoned veterans will display, explain, and demonstrate the implements they use to control weeds and manage the vineyard floor.
Confirmed Speakers: Chad Taber, Assistant Vineyard Manager/PCA, Mesa Vineyard Management; Craig Macmillan, Technical Program Manager, Vineyard Team.
