Denise

Denise's academic achievements are impressive. She has maintained a very high GPA, received distinguished honors and awards, and been involved in many extracurricular activities. However, it is her passion for public policy and social justice that truly sets her apart.

During high school, she was a member of Upward Bound, a US Department of Education initiative that assists low-income, first-generation, and limited English proficient high school students in their preparation for college. This incredible program allowed Denise to explore 7 campuses across California, discover museums, and experience various attractions. She recalls “Through the trips and workshops, I gained a wider perspective of California outside of the Central Valley, which I believe has allowed me to become a more well-rounded, aware individual.”

Denise is the first in her family to attend college and has been accepted to Yale University’s prestigious Ethics, Politics, and Economics program, with plans to focus on modern public policy strategies. She aspires to leverage this education in a career dedicated to legislative advocacy for underrepresented communities at the county and/or state level.

Denise's Updates

April 2024

This summer, Denise has the opportunity to join a cultural and language program abroad in Spain. The timing fits perfectly with her schedule! The six-week program will allow her to return to California with enough time to focus on another passion—making a positive impact in her community.

Denise is already applying for internships with California State representatives and exploring roles with non-profit organizations that support the community. Her desire to gain hands-on experience in public service shows her commitment to making a difference.

December 2024

From the moment she stepped onto campus, Denise dove headfirst into life at Yale, eager to embrace every new opportunity.

She joined Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Yale, a vibrant group that celebrates Mexican culture through traditional dance. This program allows Denise to connect with her cultural heritage and meet peers who share similar values.

Although she couldn’t make it home for the holidays, Denise spent a break in Chicago, exploring the city and bonding with friends from home.

During Thanksgiving, Denise hosted two friends at Yale. She was excited to offer them a glimpse of her new life by showing them around campus and sharing her experiences as a first-year student.

As she adjusts to the cold climate in Connecticut, Denise is stocking up on sweaters and scarves. Thanks to shopping tips from a helpful Juan Nevarez Memorial Scholarship donor and Yale alum she’s ready to purchase her first pair of winter boots.

Despite the chilly weather, California native Denise is making the most of winter. For her, each experience is a chance to grow and learn.
